Hosting Art Beyond Borders Traveling Exhibit
In a Countdown to UN International Day of Peace
The United Nations International Day of Peace marked every year on September 21st is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, “Peace Day” has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small.
On June 24, 1982, at UN Headquarters in New York, then Mayor Takeshi Araki of Hiroshima proposed the Mayors for Peace program. As of May 1, 2010, membership stood at 3,880 cities in 143 countries and regions with 157 cities in the United States.
In support of the International “Day of Peace”, TIMOTCA has initiated a 20 city members of the Mayors for Peace, in an unique banner presentation of “Art Beyond Borders.” Launched in the City of Honolulu on June 21st the exhibit began its tour across the United States with city exhibits planned in California, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Minnesota, Texas, Iowa, Arkansas, Maryland, Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York and Washington, D.C.
Similar to the passing of the Olympic Torch, each of the selected Mayors for Peace Cities will host the exhibit for several days before going to the next city, until it reaches the United Nations to be displayed during the month of December.
The exhibition is powerful in many ways…not only does it introduce the viewer to art and cultures from the far corners of the earth, it examines humanity’s common bond of creativity that exists everywhere – from remote areas to the great art centers of the world. “Art Beyond Borders is meant to open the senses of visitors to the arts of the whole world in one grand swoop, imparting a breathtaking experience of the universally connecting spirit of the arts.
Thanks to TIMOTCA’s partnership with Teacher’s Discovery, this unique “banner” presentation, and a multi-faceted curriculum created by Teachers Discovery, “Art Beyond Borders can be seen by thousands of students in schools and libraries across America.
